Colin Does: A Half Marathon Trail Run

On July 9, 2022 I ran in the Dances With Dirt: Devil’s Lake Extreme Trail Run in Baraboo, WI. I ran with my friend and co-worker, Bryan, and his friend Jared, who I had met on a few runs already. Katharine, Pepper, and I headed up Friday night after work to meet up and camp with Jared & Bryan, and their wives, Kelly & Becca. We enjoyed some foil-baked kielbasa, peppers, potatoes & onions prepared by Becca & Bryan for a late dinner around the fire, and headed to bed in preparation for the race. We woke up just after 5:00 on Saturday morning to get warmed up and complete our pre-race registration. At 7:00 a.m. we started our run, making our way up the East Bluff of Devil’s Lake and back down over the course of 13.1 miles, for a total elevation change of 2.29 mi across the whole race. It was a beautiful day on a great course and we all did well with our individual times. Afterwards we celebrated with our free food and drink tickets at the post-race party, then headed back to the campsite for a delicious lunch of sandwiches on fresh bread baked by Becca.
