Colin Does: A Michigan U.P. Winter Adventure

Katharine and I took a long weekend at the end of her spring break to drive up to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and do some winter hiking and camping. We hit the road early on Friday morning and drove to the U.P. to find a place to camp for the night near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We looked around for a while and checked out a few campsites but they were all snowed in. Finally we found one that was open and set up camp for the night. The next morning we hiked along the bluffs at Pictured Rocks and saw some frozen waterfalls. That night we drove to Marquette, MI to stay in a hotel where we got a nice hot dinner and enjoyed the night in a heated room. On Sunday we checked out of the hotel and headed to Presque Isle Park, a state park peninsula sticking out into Lake Superior, and hiked the perimeter of the park all along the coast line of the lake with some great views from bluffs and ice chunks floating in the water. We drove home later that day and stopped at a local Wisconsin cheese shop on the way back!
